CDRPS and Re-offending: Initial Expectations of the New Government - 21sT MaY 2010

CDRPS: The New Statutory Duty to Reduce Re-offending

Friday 21st May 2010

Local Government House, Smith Square, Westminster, SW1

The general election has now been announced as May 6th 2010.

This one-day conference at Local Government House, Westminster provides an opportunity to hear from representatives of Central Government and other agencies on new objectives for CDRPs with regards to the re-offending agenda. This is highly relevant to the implementation of the new duties Under the Police and Crime Act 2009, coming into force in April 2010:

  • Partnerships now have a statutory duty to reduce reoffending;

  • The Probation Service has changed in legal status from a co-operating body to a full responsible body as defined by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998;

  • Responsible authorities are now required to routinely reduce reoffending through an extension of their section 17 duties.

These new duties will need to be implemented within a framework of public sector budget restraint and a possible change in Government priorities. Central Government’s expectation of CDRPs and local authorities implementation of these duties will become clearer after the general election.

This one-day conference at Local Government House looks at the amended legislation, the new guidance for partnerships and the new duties on partnerships and individual responsible authorities to tackle re-offending. Most importantly, it also provides an excellent opportunity to hear from Government representatives on the initial priorities and direction of the new government.

Speakers Include:

  • Jenny Oklikah, the Home Office

  • Stuart Douglass, Chair of Community Safety Advisors, Local Government Association (LGA)

  • National Offender Management Service (NOMS)

  • Ian Fox, Policy Development and Business Capability Manager, the Probation Association
