‘That was the Year That Was’ 2008

The introductory session will provide an overview of the challenges faced by events in 2008 and the lessons learned. The presentation will provide a round up of health and safety issues affecting 2008 events including the work at heights regulations and, after one of the wettest summers on record, will look at planning for inclement weather.

A: Event Management Sustainability - BS8901
National Outdoor Events Association Representative
British Standard 8901 on Event Management Sustainability was drafted in 2006 and the final document was published in November 2007. This workshop looks at the standard and the way event organisers could work with or toward BS8901.
B: Greener Festivals

The Association of Independent Festivals This workshop will look at how environmentally efficient methods can be used at festivals and events to limit the impact on the environment. It will provide case studies of good practice and provide a forum for discussion about how environmental impact can be limited at future events.

Noise at Work
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Representative
In April 2008, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations came into force in the entertainment sector and applied to staff working in venues where music is played. This session looks at how the Act has been implemented and the impact on event management.

Community Arts and Events – the Role of the Local Authority
David Brownlee, Director, Public Engagement, Arts Council England
The Arts Council recently completed research into audience segmentation and how local populations view local arts events. It also looked at how an authorities events and arts programmes can affect the perception of community cohesion. This session looks at the implications from the research and provides a view of the role of local authorities in providing a balanced programme of arts and live events and in facilitating events by the private sector.

This workshop will provide an update on all licensing issues of concern for the staging of live events including the development and changes in guidance of the Licensing Act and other related legislation, guidance and good practice.

Event Organiser Competence – How do we measure it?

In 2008 the Licensing Act 03 was used by local police to prevent Babyshambles playing at a
festival as they were not convinced that the organisers could control the crowds or had properly considered health and safety. In addition, in Portsmouth, a three-day festival was cancelled when the Local Safety Advisory Group became concerned with the planning of the event. This session looks at how local authorities can be assured of competence. It will look at:
· What level of documentation should be requested with a
Premise Licence Application
· What information should the documentation contain
· Event Organiser’s CV
· Quality and experience of their contractors
· Reasonable timescales for the receipt of documentation
