This annual one-day conference provides local authority Events Officers, Recreation Managers and Licensing Officers with a round-up of the key changes in legislation and guidance that will affect the staging of local authority events in 2009. This year’s conference focuses on legality, good practice and competence.
2008 was a challenging year for the staging of events with some being cancelled due to weather, low-ticket sales or, in some instances, concerns regarding competence. In the light of this, the conference will examine how competence can be measured. The conference will also examine the implementation of new legislation, initiatives and research – such as the Noise at Work Act and the recent research by The Arts Council on the role of local authorities in community arts events.Workshops will enable an in-depth look at sustainability, copyright and licensing issues.
This is an important conference for all those involved in local authority event management, production and licensing.
Conference Objectives:

- To provide an overview of the challenges faced by events in 2008 and the lessons learned.
- To examine how “competence” can be measured following the use of the Licensing Act and other legislation to force the cancellation of events in 2008 following concerns around safety and competence.
- To examine the implementation of new legislation and practices and their impact on the event industry.
- To look at the implication of recent research by the Arts Council into community participation in arts and events and the role of the local authority.
- To examine the impact of the application of the Noise at Work regulations to the event industry in 2008.
- To highlight the move towards “Greener Events” and to provide a forum for examining good practice and sustainability including the development of BS 8901.
- To focus on the key areas of understanding required by event organisers around licensing and copyright legislation.
