Dr Hilary Cremin, Faculty for Education, University of Cambridge

Dr Hilary Cremin is a Senior Lecturer who researches and teaches in the areas of social and emotional wellbeing, citizenship education and conflict resolution in schools and communities. In this keynote address she will provide a view on alternatives to rewards and sanctions in dealing with conflict and challenge.

11.30 The LGA View – The Role of the Local Authority as the Key
Agency in Worklessness Planning

The Local Government Association (LGA) speaker to be confirmed

This presentation from the Local Government Association will provide a local government view of the current work being undertaken by local authorities in pro-active strategies to combat worklessness. It will focus particularly on the benefits service and the various different services that need to join up to provide a comprehensive forward thinking policy.

12.20 Moving to Alternatives to Rewards and Sanctions

This session will focus on the introduction and implementation of alternatives to rewards and sanctions in different educational sectors; primary, secondary, special and residential care. The speakers are all experienced practitioners of restorative approaches and will provide an insight into how their organisations managed the culture change:

12.15 Workshops: Overcoming the Challenges to a Change in Culture

The workshops will focus on overcoming the barriers to implementing different approaches to challenge, disruption, conflict and motivation. All workshops are led by leaders who have experience of changing from a “rewards and sanctions” approach to a restorative approach in their establishments.

The key note addresses will provide an analysis and examination of the success of restorative approaches in three different settings. It will provide an insight into the development of restorative approaches over many years and whether original objectives and hopes were met.

14.00 World Café: ‘Restorative Approaches’ do not work!
Hosted by: Dr Belinda Hopkins, Transforming Conflict
Preparatory Input: Luke Roberts, Anti-bullying and Restorative Approaches Co-ordinator, London Borough of Croydon

This world café session will air some of the doubts and concerns that those involved in restorative approaches in education and care settings hear and feel. The initial input will provide the view that restorative approaches do not work, in order to provoke analysis and solutions using the world cafe format.

Refreshments will be served during the world café
