Local Authorities are charged with introducing electronic government by 2005. Effective electronic service involves balancing privacy of the individual against sharing of data, between authorities, across the wider public sector and within the authority, in ways that will enhance service provision, promote better policy making and improve efficiency. Authorities will need to consider their internal policies and the complex legislation governing these issues such as the Data Protection Act 1998, the Human Rights Act and the Freedom of Information Act. Authorities also need to ensure that policies governing their electronic service assure the public and maintain trust.
This one day conference will assist authorities in the development of their electronic services by focusing on the legislation, policies and practices integral to achieving the balance between public assurance, integrity of customer privacy and data sharing.
